Complete the challenge below, and submit to your lecturer.
The Lecturer can enter his/ her best candidates, according to his/ her selection, to go through to Foschini's judging process. The Foschini team of judges will select 12 students from across the country to proceed to the next round in the competition.
NB - The shortlisted candidates will receive a budget and be required to produce the sketched garments.
What?
Design a range of contemporary reality fashion items for the Foschini brand, which caters for the fashionable and trend-savvy South African woman. This range must consist of items that, although different, can be mixed and matched, and worn in various ways.
The Theme
The look is the Summer 2009 trend: La Dolce Vita
From cruising, to living it up at upmarket and exclusive members-only clubs, these polished looks have a classic versatility with mass appeal.
Fabric and print direction
- Nautical stripes in new and interesting executions.
- Small and large scale spots, regular or hand drawn.
- New checks, encompassing freestyle checks, yarn-dyes, and printed checks as well as re-invented gingham checks.
- Resort-inspired florals feature in cool colours and classic black and white.
- Fresh cottons, floaty voiles, beautiful cool anglaise, drapy knits, a touch of glitz and luxurious silks all combine to create La Dolce Vita.
Styling direction
Take Summer's hottest items into account. These could include dresses in all shapes and forms, the item blazer, harem-inspired pants and the all-in-one both short and long.
Submit
- 3 x A3 design boards for La Dolce Vita contemporary range sketches with fabric swatches and accessory recommendations.
- Entry form with Full name, age, ID number, contact number, e-mail address, name of institution and year of study.
- A 500-word motivation for winning, and descriptor of your work.

PHASE 2
The 12 short listed candidates have to create the garments submitted in their previous entry of design boards.
These must consist of items that can be matched in a versatile way to create a number of different outfits.
Detailed brief to be sent through to the successful candidates.

6 students will be eliminated
Final Round
The final stage of the competition will see the successful 6 students creating an evening gown for Tatum Keshwar, Miss South Africa 2008. Depending on the quality of the winning creation, Tatum may wear this to the Miss South Africa 2009 pageant, where she will hand over the crown to the new queen.
This stage will also include 1 week of Internship of Foschini Head Office in the Western Cape. From these designs, the winner of the 2009 Design awards will be chosen.
