Work your way through three phases, designing ranges inspired by key summer trends.
PHASE 1
This competition has to be entered by individuals.
Complete the challenge below, and submit to your lecturer.
The Lecturer can enter his/her best candidates, according to his/ her selection, to go through to Foschini’s judging process. The Foschini team of judges will select 10 students from across the country to proceed to the next round in the competition.
NB – The shortlisted candidates will receive a budget and be required to produce the garments entered in the sketching phase.
WHAT?
Design a range of contemporary reality fashion items for the Foschini brand, which caters for the fashionable and trend-savvy South African woman. It must consist of items that can be matched in a versatile way to create a number of different outfits.
THE THEME?
Choose between the following Summer themes (more information on these is available in the briefing pack). Please ensure to do adequate research on the trends.
- Lady Boudoir
- Haute Hippie the Love Child
- Wild Wild West
SUBMIT
- 3x A3 design boards for your chosen contemporary range sketches with fabric swatches and accessory recommendations.
- Entry form with Full name, age, ID number, contact number, e-mail address, name of institution and year of study.
- A 500-word motivation for being selected, and a description of your work and inspiration.

PHASE 2
The 10 short listed candidates have to create 3 outfits from the garments submitted in their previous entry of design boards. These must consist of items that can be matched in a versatile way to create a number of different outfits.

FINAL ROUND
The final stage of the competition will see the successful 6 students creating a showstopper outfit for their runway debut. Carrying on the flow of the theme you have chosen in the first round, you must now show the source and culmination of your inspiration that brought about your commercial range. This is your inspirational, creative, avant-garde creation that will show how well you can adapt from a commercial designer to a couturier. This stage will also include 1 week of Internship at Foschini Head Office in the Western Cape.
From these designs, the winner of the 2009 Design awards will be chosen.

2. Haute Hippie the Love Child – Eclectic, sophisticated globe trekkers dressed to impress with their unique blend of free-spirited style.

3. Wild Wild West – From the innocent prairie girl to the hightailing cowgirl, this is a sexy story of femininity and adventurous attitude.
